Dec. 27th, 2007 @ 04:50 am the OLPC
Notice she already knows where the letters are - she learned most of the keyboard more quickly than I'd have believed, in just a few minutes a day with me typing on my macbook. It must help not to be saddled by our adult notions of what order the letters "should" be in. I also love how she can often find ambiguity in statements I've forgotten are ambiguous, thanks to all those shared assumptions that she doesn't share. What does "two Ms" mean? Her interpretation makes more logical sense than what I meant to convey.

One laptop per Ivy

Writing is very difficult - when do kids develop the muscles to make it possible? I would guess she'll be typing before she's writing. Has anyone out there with an older kid than mine tested that theory?

It depends....

Writing is a fine motor skill, which develops in kids with a wide range of ages. My daughter could write and color well at the age of about 2.5 while my son took much longer to have comparable skills.

Both, however, could find their way around the keyboard of a PC pretty well.

We got our daughter (9) an OLPC for Christmas and it's been a total hit so far.

Just curious as to when you placed your order. I ordered one for my child (8) on November 13th, and still haven't received it...

Although he was disappointed it hasn't arrived yet, he is very excited that a less fortunate child will be getting one as well. It would be nice to know exactly where, or who, received the donated OLPC - but I realize it's probably impossible to track...

By the way, I've realized (again) that a little disappointment in a child, actually isn't a bad thing once in a while.

I ordered one for myself around then and got it a week ago
I haven't had time to play around with it, does anyone have any recommendations for what apps are fun to play around with as an adult?

My kids could physically write at about 2.5, but it takes time for them to get good and precise and readable. Nicole at almost-8 has printing and cursive that are both far better than mine, although slower. Her typing isn't so hot, but she doesn't use a keyboard too often. She's fine hunting and pecking, but no real touch-typing yet. At 5, Gabrielle's writing still shows signs of childishness, with mis-sized and occasionally backwards lettering.

Weirdly, nobody ever really taught Nicole cursive, but she knows it hands-down. Neither of her schools did it, nor did Carmen or I, and it's a total mystery how she picked it up.

Grammar nit: did you realize that you told Ivy there "is two Ms?" I'm weirdly and pathologically precise about this, both in spoken speech and in writing, probably as a result of slightly abusive parents.

Hey, I said "there's two Ms", not "there is two Ms." I'm damaged but not that damaged. Maybe I'd say it right if "there're" didn't sound so much like a certain verboten word. We must all come together to win this war on there're!

Almost nobody gets the contracted form right and it irritates me slighly every time I hear that particular infraction. Amusingly, I let one slip the other day and both daughters nailed me on it in seconds -- and thankfully, they realize that they can and should do that to me but not to their friends, or else risk permanent defriending. But your rejoinder has been bothering me for days, just because I can't for the life of me figure out what the evil word is.

Really? I don't believe you.
