So take out traffic accidents and other non-violent deaths, and you’re left with 69 officers killed on the job by criminals last year. That’s out of about 850,000 officers nationwide.

What strikes me about that statistic is that I would bet more fictional cops met violent ends last year, even if we limit ourselves to counting only first-run episodes of prime-time cop shows and movies budgeted at 8+ figures. Throw in reruns and lower budget movies and it'll be a landslide.
