Tomorrow morning ivy's little sister will be taking her leave of the womb and joining us on the outside. Last kid before we have to switch to zone defense. I've learned so much about knowledge acquisition by observing ivy these past 2 3/4 years - one of the things I'm most looking forward to with #2 is getting a sense of what was universal and what was individual to ivy. Not that both of my kids doing something will prove its universality across all humankind, but #2 can do some disproving, and I'll allow myself some extrapolation. Also, tomorrow I can stop calling her #2, which is for the best because it always makes me think of that scene from austin powers. "WHO DOES NUMBER TWO WORK FOR?"

Feel free to try to guess her name. How's this for unlikely: the sister of one of my friends named her kid ivy, the name coming to mind for her because of our ivy. She's pregnant again and my friend told me what their leading name is if it's a girl - and it's our #2's name. I thought he must be messing with me, having somehow found out our naming plans, but apparently not. Perhaps people who like the name ivy are naturally predisposed to like this name too.

I'll throw in a guess that in order to save on previously monogrammed baby items, you'll go with the letter "I" once again.

Hey .... given your last name, your kids (will) have their own "I.P. address"

Also, when naming ivy I was quite conscious she'd be I.S.P.

We're expecting number two in 6 weeks...we picked the names, either way, about 3 months in. Unfortunately, neither ultrasound revealed whether Gracie is having a baby brother or sister. I too an interested in the universal v individual.
Since we haven't revealed the name choices to our family, my brother-in-law has taken to call the child '?' in emails, which then convinced me that whatever we have, I'll be nicknaming the baby "the Riddler" which probably isn't that far from what a second will actually be.
Good luck Paul, and best wishes to your wife and big sister Ivy!

in keeping with the Phil Ivy/ Ivy Phillips format, I assumed #2 would be named Hellmuth or perhaps Gordon

It's a shame your last name isn't some variation on Sam, I think Grizzle would make a lovely name for a girl.

Based on my experience with 3 daughters, I think you might be surprised at just how much is individual to each of your kids.

Congratulations to you all!

an Iraq titbit in

claiming, I believe, insurgents subconsciously attack civilians over US soldiers in order to limit the opposition; that is the motive is subconscious - not that accessibility has anything to do with it.

Caesarean?

(Permanent Link)
Paulp,

If I had read this post a month ago I would be intrigued at how you knew exactly when #2 was coming into the world until my wife had #1 before Christmas (via C-section). When I heard that when our #2 comes, (God willing in a few years....on second thought maybe a decade from now) the process will be as easy as scheduling a hair appointment 9 months in advance I was almost to the state of laughter. I am still fascinated by this and I assume your wife might of had a C-Section for Ivy. Or I am just an over assuming idiot :-) and your wife is scheduled to be induced into labor. Either way, best of luck to you. nh sir.

You are correct. Ivy was "footling breech" and refused to be turned around. We went for an external version but she was having none of it. Sometimes people go for VBAC but we decided the die had been cast.

Congrats, I hope. As for the names, that is freaky that you know people with the same names. That is no concern for us - we went with Artemis and Isis for our two daughters. No chance that is replicated! We kept strict secrecy to prevent anyone from "borrowing" either name before we used it.

The earlier comment about individuality is spot on! You'll be lucky if they do anything alike.

The best thing about the name Isis is that when she makes a huge fuss I can call her "Crisis", which really sets off her mother!

And of course she has some "iSis" shirts, since she is an accessory to her sister.

Kid Names

(Permanent Link)
I have to admit I'm really interested to see what the new name is. Your comment about Ivy's initials being ISP really makes me think it'll be some dorky engineer sort of thing, so either another 'I' name or something that makes another acronym I haven't thought of.

It would be remiss of me to not recommend you ditch whatever you are actually naming your daughter and tell you to name her Christine instead as my sister is named Christine and she was born on January 8th.

All that being said, at this point in time the new arrival should already have occurred so hopefully everything went well and you're smoking a cigar or whatever it is you do to celebrate new kids these days.
