Jan. 14th, 2008 @ 08:45 am fun facts about ruby
Ruby Giselle Phillips, that is:

BORN 01/08/08 precisely at 0800
8.0 POUNDS (margin of error 1.5% - actual recorded weight 7 lbs 14.4 oz)
20 INCHES (which would mean 8 inches to the Skorkles on planet Beezbum, where they count in base 4)
[Update: dianagram points out this could also be represented as 1 ft 8 inches, if you have something against Skorkles. On an unrelated note: if anyone's wondering if new babies impact your sleep schedule, there may be inferences available.]

Current stable version of ruby to two digits: 1.8 (1.9 is a developer release)

On 01/08 not long before 8:00 PM, we ordered dinner in the hospital room. As a hospital patient kathleen's was free, but I had to pay for mine. Total bill: eight dollars. Usually I carry around enough money for day-to-day incidentals, but on this day my wallet was unusually light for some reason. It contained exactly eight singles! I submit photographic evidence, which as you know would be impossible to fake. It's all true! If I believed in any of the weird stuff people believe in, I am sure I would find some significance among all these eights.

And a few more pictures.

(Elaboration on base 4 for the less mathy types: 1, 2, 3, 10, 11, 12, 13, 20.)

Nice work, Papa Phillips!

Judging from your opinions of 9/11 conspiracy freaks, you're surely aware that the "this number comes up everywhere!" game can be played with any number. I enjoyed watching such madness unfold in The Number 23.

The Skorkles are a weird bunch.

NO! It can only be played with the number eight! Are you suggesting it's mere coincidence that they exclusively use base 4 on planet beezbum? Truly, there is none so blind as he who will not see.

Oh sure, find the circuitous route from 20 inches to 1s and 8s after I already laid out the optimal route via beezbum.

For having no experience, Ivy looks like she is doing an awesome job as big sister! Congratulations to you and Kathleen on Ruby's birth...perhaps her draw to the number 8 could extend to allowing you guys 8 hours of continuous nighttime sleep.

Yet, I only have $2 on me today.

Isn't this a coincidence? Of course, I don't believe in them.... :)

Oh, and congrats, Paul. Remember that taking care of kids goes up exponentially as the number increases, as opposed to linearly.

Ruby was born on a Tuesday ...

... and since no one guess what she was gonna be named .... "who could hang a name on you?" was quite appropriate :-)

1) The picture of Ivy in the "Dr. Phillips" scrubs is priceless. Was that your doing? Your wife surely loves you for little things like that.

2) RGP? I thought you were more of a 2+2 fan.

3) Off topic, but how come you don't capitalize Ivy's name in your posts/responses lately? I tend to customize my grammar to the formality of of what I'm writing - is that what you've been doing?

I'm sure my wife would love me more if I did do things like that, but generally (and in this case) it's my wife who does things like that.

Four is a crappy name for a kid. (Seven, however...)

I haven't capitalized names in years, except when I do. I'm not sure why - maybe I just decided to save the bazillion keystrokes between here and eternity.

You'll clearly have to get her this book at some point:

http://www.amazon.com/Eight-Novel-Suspense-Katherine-Neville/dp/0345366239

Maybe for her 8th birthday? (note that unless she's a freaking super duper genius it'll probably be too much for her then, but still.....)
