Ten years after I released it, the webserver I wrote in college now runs images.slashdot.org serving up billions of images.
It may well run on lots of other high traffic site, but among geeks slashdot is the archetypal high traffic site. The "slashdot effect" is the name for what happens to many other peoples' servers when slashdot links to them: they slow to a crawl under the crushing load of all the slashdot readers coming at once.
I remember feeling a minor thrill each time I heard about anyone using boa at all, but I would never have imagined it would be in heavy use ten years later. You have to love free software.

Re: No wonder...
OK, can you tell I'm from the Slashdot crowd? I replied without following your link first. I was under the impression that they just switched to Boa, I guess they've always been using it.*open mouth, insert foot*

Haha, I thought you meant the slash dot site slowed to a crawl under the crushing load of all the Paul Phillips journal readers coming at once.December 22 2004, 21:24:05 UTC 7 years ago
Re: No wonder...
Hilarious, now that you've pointed out that interpretation I can't read it any other way, like when you're looking at an optical illusion with two possible brain interpretations and find you can't switch.December 23 2004, 17:57:40 UTC 7 years ago

Well Now You've Done It
As of 19:00 EST 12/23/2004, slashdot.org is down!!!! ;)December 24 2004, 00:21:56 UTC 7 years ago
Re: Well Now You've Done It
I saw that, but the main slashdot server runs apache. Do take notice that images.slashdot.org, running boa, is still fully operational.December 24 2004, 01:05:42 UTC 7 years ago
Re: Well Now You've Done It
Indeed it is. I was referring to the Phillips-Live-Journal Effect though ;)PS: Any reason why you're not in Ron Rose's new book "Poker Aces?" Were you approached and declined or simply ignored. If I had to guess, it would be the former as the latter is simply a poor oversight on his part.

Re: Well Now You've Done It
I didn't realize there was a compelling need for a Paul Phillips bobblehead doll, however, there might be a demand for a book written by him....Of course, I could be wrong, but I might be right....
