I like the idea that beyond all the other problems/controversy surrounding him right now, Dutch Boyd also secretly drowns cats.

It's great though, isn't it? I know I laughed for probably half an hour, on and off, about it. The "eating the rabbit if I don't get any money" thing, at least. The "I've gotten 18k$ from you poor fools!" part, though... I think I may have just kept laughing because it was so pathetic and didn't want to consider the reality that many people are truly that dumb.

On the other hand, I did feel tempted to give him a dollar or two, just because it was such a funny idea. :) 9 thousand visitors each doing that once would all that would take (so, who knows).

Hmm.. I suspect he did get that money. It kept incrementing right up to the point paypal shut off that link. That was worth 50 cents in just the humor value alone.

There was a rash of "save..." pages a few years back. They really do make money. Someone funny and amusing can do this.

The correspondence page, including angry emails denouncing the practice of cat modification, is especially choice:

Wow. I just read Dutch's account of pokerspot on his site. He's still lying about it. He says that things were going great until the problems with NetPro in January of 2001. But if they were going great for him, it's because when people made deposits, he wasn't keeping the money in an account so that he could pay cashbacks; he was just spending it, and hoping that everyone would be raked to death before they could cash out. I tried to cash out in September, and he put off my cashout with one excuse after another until the Netpro thing hit in January.

I think that he intended until Netpro hit to pay me eventually. But that doesn't change the fact that he was running PokerSpot as a pyramid scheme long before that. That is, the money deposited from the people I won money from had long since been spent by Dutch. His intention was to pay me from future deposits, and then to pay future cashouts from still later deposits. Even if he hadn't run into the problems with NetPro, if PokerSpot had failed simply from inability to attract new customers, the old customers would have been left holding the bag.

I don't know all the details of Pokerspot, but I am under the impression that "ALL" the online poker sites DO NOT segregate player deposits from operating capital EXCEPT POKERSTARS and they only instituted that policy in the last few months.

I don't think anyone should assume that there are seperate accounts with their money in it that are protected in the event a site runs out of operating capital and must liquidate. In fact, I am getting extremely suspicious of the aggressiveness of some of the bonus promotions these days. It is obvious that many break even or better players are just bonus whoring their way to thousands of dollars of bonus profits and removing the money as soon as they earn it to head to the next site.

Before it is all over, I think we are going to have a lot more casualities among all these sites. I believe the business itself will continue to grow, but IMO there are way too many sites right now. There needs to be a consolidation to just a few larger ones.

I no longer keep large deposits at any of the sites for long and won't until I have a very clear understanding of how these operations are running their finances.

Other sites other than pokerstars may not have players' money segregated. But they do keep some money a liquid form where it's ready for sending to players when they cash out. It's possible that the amount they have available is less than the total amount outstanding, so that if everyone tried to cash out at the same time, they would be in trouble, the way banks were when there was a run on a bank pre-FDIC.

But other sites actually do let people cash out. PokerSpot kept making one excuse after another and not cashing me out between September and January. The fact that Dutch characterizes this as a time when PokerSpot was doing well, rather than in crisis, is a lie, unless he characterizes "enough money coming in that you can pay the bills if you don't pay the cashouts" as doing well.

Not defending Dutch. I am just pointing out that if other companies also don't have enough cash available to cash everyone out because player account money is not segregated from operating capital, that is screaming out loud that there is a weakness in the business model that will eventually be exposed if the company does not reach critical mass.

Since I expect many of the smaller sites to never reach critical mass, IMO it's just a matter of time before many more players get screwed by other sites.

I believe that's why the first time and reload bonuses are getting so aggressive. I believe many companies have not reached critical mass and are approaching the point where they can't handle customer withdrawals.

I'd be willing to bet anything that Dutch did do some cash outs for awhile and then ultimately it all blew up when he couldn't attract enough new cash to both operate and handle cash outs. Had he been more succesful in attracting new deposits he could have operated for a long time before blowing up (IMO, much like some of the other sites are doing right now).

This is just my opinion about the industry at this point, but I am handling my own accounts at various sites under the assumption that all my deposits are at risk, but those at the larger sites are clearly at less risk
